#GIRLSPOWER - For more participation of women on the job market in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

Marina Bohrer da Silva is from TECNOSINOS TechPark and Unisinos Incubator Management Team and wrote us a report encouraging more participation of women in the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) area.

Let's get down to her report!

I was very happy and grateful for the opportunity to share a little of my experience as a woman and professional working in the technology market. In Brazil and in the world the participation of women in technological careers does not exceed 25%. If we think about leadership positions, this participation drops even more, reaching levels below 10%.

I have been working for 3 years in the management team of a Technological Park of national reference, Tecnosinos. One of my goals here is to work for the expansion of female participation in this sector, predominantly occupied by men.

The world can only grow if we encourage diversity in the job market. A balanced distribution of positions in terms of gender, race, social status, physical condition, age group, and level of education will bring different life experiences and points of view on technical and behavioral contexts, adding a more complex and whole view of the world to the organizations.

But for diversity to generate growth and positive gains in companies, we must also talk about inclusion. In other words, promoting equal opportunities of access and participation. Only in this way we will gain the rewards that valuing differences can provide to the entrepreneurial result.

That is why many of the companies that are part of Tecnosinos adopt recruitment and selection policies that encourage the hiring of minorities. A successful example is the guideline of many IT multinationals that obliges leaderships to include at least one woman in the final selection processes. If we let sexist culture prevail, the "natural" tendency is for the leader to select only men in the final stages.

We also receive many groups of women to get to know the local innovation ecosystem and get to know the career opportunities in the big IT players and in nascent companies - startups. Owning your own innovative business is also an important window for female IT visibility and representation.

If you could leave a tip or an advice for girls who want to follow the area of information and communication technology, either by opening their own business or occupying a very important position like yours, what would it be?

"Girls, believe in your potential first and foremost. We can be whatever we want to be and be wherever we want to be!!! It doesn't matter if your chosen professional area is predominantly male. Think that you are paving the way for many other women, motivating and inspiring new professionals. Diversity and inclusion in the workplace will only bring gains for everyone. Study project management, programming languages, advanced technologies. Develop your listening, negotiation, creativity, and resilience skills and let's break into the world of technology careers!!!"
